Rest in Peace Father James J. Patton

The Reverend James J. Patton, Senior Priest-Retired, died Thursday, 7 April 2016, after having received the prayerful support and consolation of the Sacraments.

James Joseph Patton was born on 27 June 1938. His parents were the late Martin M. and Helen E. (Weisheit). He was educated at St. Colman Elementary School, Cleveland, St. Charles College, Cantonsville, MD, Borromeo Seminary, Wickliffe and St. Mary Seminary, Cleveland. On 22 May 1965 in the Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist, Bishop Clarence G. Issenmann ordained him to the priesthood for the service of the Diocese of Cleveland.

Fr. Patton’s first assignment was as Parochial Vicar of St. Francis Xavier, Medina. In addition he served as Auxiliary Notary and Procurator-Advocate for the Diocesan Tribunal Office effective 17 October 1969. On 28 June 1972 he was transferred to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Wickliffe to serve as Parochial Vicar. Fr. Patton was assigned Parochial Vicar of St. Bernadette, Westlake on 27 June 1974. On 27 June 1979 he was appointed Vicar of Temporal Affairs of St. Joseph, Strongsville. On 3 December 1980 Fr. Patton was named Pastor of St. Mary, Chardon. During this assignment he also served as Associate Judge for the Tribunal effective 21 September 1983. On 3 September 1992 Fr. Patton was named Pastor of St. Cyprian, Perry. Fr Patton retired on 30 June 2008. He was well loved and generously served the people entrusted to his care.  His warm smile and quick humor will be greatly missed.

The wake will begin with Vespers on Thursday, 19 May in St. Cyprian Church, 4223 Middle Ridge Road, Perry, OH 44081 at 3:00 p.m. Bishop Roger Gries will be the presider and Fr. Albert Krupp will be the homilist. The wake will continue until 8:00 p.m.  The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, 20 May in St. Cyprian Church at 11:00 a.m. Bishop Richard Lennon will be the main celebrant and Fr. Thomas Mahoney will be the homilist. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery, Cleveland.
